Tabula Zoologica

April 2007, Newsletter of the School of Zoology

Previous Issues February 07 March 07

Welcome

Associate Professor Jenny Davis from the School of Environmental Science at Murdoch University, Western Australia, who is spending nine months on sabbatical at the School of Zoology. Jenny’s research interests are in freshwater ecology, specifically the ecology, conservation and management of wetlands.  Her main task while at UTAS is to complete a book on the ecology of wetlands and shallow lakes. Jenny is already appreciating the cool air, mountain landscapes and freshwater that Tasmania still has in abundance (despite the drought).

New postgrad students

Michael Todd will be working on characteristics, occurrence and management of habitat for Masked Owls.

His supervisors are A/Prof Alastair Richardson and Dr Sarah Munks.

The Deep End…

Most of us see fishing as fun on a lazy day. You cast your line, reel in a prize, and relax. But at the University of Tasmania , fishing goes in The Deep End…

The University of Tasmania is one of Australia 's oldest and most respected institutions, and one of the country's leading marine research Universities. At UTAS, students and post-graduate researchers take their passion for all things aquatic and turn it into their life's work, studying everything from chubby seagulls, to abalone, and relocating rock lobsters.

The popular jokesters on Hook, Line and Sinker are teaming up with the academics at UTAS to present you with a range of mind-stretching sea stories that will excite your curiosity about what lies beneath the deep blue sea!

So broaden your horizons, take a deep breath, and jump into The Deep End with UTAS presenter Dr Alistair Hobday and Hook, Line and Sinker!
