Field Operations

All field trip participants should have a working familiarity with the UTas Field Activity Policy.pdf and must individually complete a TUFSS registration (contact details, where they are going, etc) before they will be permitted to go on UTas field trips.
A field trip may involve walking, driving, flying, swimming, boating, snorkeling, diving, 4WDing etc.anything at all and be:

  • part of formal courses
  • associated with researchers or research projects
  • a volunteering situation
  • informal diving recreation associated with any UTas field course or activity.

(Our field activity definition does not include inter-campus travel, meetings off-site or attendance at conferences.)

  • Snorkel Diving permissions
    • Until you are specifically cleared for snorkeling, you are not permitted to SNORKEL DIVE, even for recreation, during UTas field trips.
  • SCUBA Diving permissions
    • You are NOT permitted to do SCUBA or other diving operations at any time while on a UTas field trip unless you have been specifically cleared to do so by the UTas Diving Officer.
  • Statement of Understanding
    • An acknowledgement that you have read and understand your responsibilities

TUFSS REGISTRATION

Information on TUFSS will remain strictly confidential, medical details will only be relevant in case of emergency.

Log in with your standard UTas email Username and Password. You will then be asked if you want to create a new personnel record. Click yes to view the Personnel Registration screen.

If you have registered previously you will need to click the 'Edit' button to enter new/update information.

At any time during the data entry process you can save the record as a draft (a good idea to do this after entering data on each tab!), and once your registration has been completed, you should click on the “Save and Lodge' button at the bottom of the record, to submit it for approval. Lodging it will prompt the system to send an e-mail to the UTAS Field and Diving Officer, notifying him that your registration is awaiting approval. Simply saving the registration without lodging it for approval will leave it on the system as a draft (with no e-mail notifications generated).

To register go to TUFSS site,https://fomsprod.its.utas.edu.au/ (must be accessed from within the University network).

Field Project Registration

An essential part of the project design for field work will involve risk management:

  • identifying risks inherent in the fieldwork
  • implementing control mechanisms required to reduce these risks to an acceptable level

Once have had your individual Personnel Registration approved on TUFSS, Field Project Registration forms are accessible from menus on your Personnel home page. Registrations for a Project will be the field work participants' responsibility (although Simon Talbot or Adam Stephens can certainly be consulted for assistance!)

NB: Early each semester Simon will conduct a session on Risk Assessments .

Field Project Registrations and Risk Assessments MUST be completed to a satisfactory standard well before departure on field trips, and may be assessed as part of your course/degree.
