Research projects - 2009
Please contact prospective supervisors well before the honours start date in February or August. Academic staff of the School of Zoology are usually available to supervise honours projects but people may be on leave or already fully committed. Alternative supervisors outside of the School could sometimes be more suitable**. These include researchers at the Marine Research Laboratory, the Antarctic Division or with State government agencies.
**
It is up to you to keep alternative supervisors informed of your progress as you investigate your eligibility to start Honours.
Some supervisors offer prescribed research projects, others list a range of general topics and are prepared to negotiate a project subject.
Extra Skills or Qualifications needed
Consider and discuss with your potential supervisor what practical skills or qualifications may be needed for your project. For example, you may need to have a current driver's licence to enable you to do field work. Bear in mind that the Honours program is very intense, so there is little spare time during your Honours to pursue such things as coxswain's certificates, specialised diving qualifications, or learning a completely new computer programming language. Again, each project is different, so it is difficult to be prescriptive, but please discuss the issues with your supervisor .
Projects by supervisor
Staff at the Marine Research Laboratories in Taroona may offer honours projects in marine science. For further information please contact Dr Kerrie Swadling or Assoc Professor Stewart Frusher (phone 03 62277271)
Honours project Booklet
A booklet describing Honours projects and research areas is also prepared each year. You may ask for a copy to be mailed to you by contacting the School Secretary (ph. 03 6226 2613)
