Welcome
Yuni Eswaryanti from Indonesia has commenced her PhD working with Sue and Erik on Niche partitioning in lizards. Yuni previously did an MSc with Randy Rose and we are delighted to have her back.
We welcome Dr Regina Magierowski back to the School in her new guise as River Health and Landscape Scientist. Reg will be working with Peter Davies and Steve Read (Forestry Tasmania) as part of a multi-disciplinary team examining the impacts of changed land practices on river & estuarine health in TAS.
Professor Ido Pen recently arrived and will be working with Erik Wapstra for a few weeks. Ido is a theoretical modeller from Groningen, The Netherlands.
Graduating Zoology PhD's in December

Awards & Congratulations!
It has been a busy past few months for awards and recognitions so now a few people need to be congratulated!
Erik Wapstra was awarded a “Rising Star Award” in October. These highly prestigious awards have been made to only 15 of 55 applicants around the university. These Rising Stars have been recognised as having the potential to become exceptional research leaders. Congratulations Erik!
Mark Hindell will soon be receiving a DSc for his substantial and internationally outstanding body of work on Antarctic Ecosystems, Mark will formally receive this title at the upcoming December graduation.
Our HoS Sue Jones was recently awarded a Teaching Award by The Australian Teaching & Learning Council. Teaching Awards celebrate a group of the nations most outstanding university teachers in their fields. Teaching Awards give recognition to teachers renowned for the excellence of their teaching, who have outstanding presentation skills and who have made a broad and deep contribution to enhancing the quality of learning and teaching in higher education. This award was presented at Parliament House in Canberra, HUGE congratulations to Sue for this incredibly high achievement!
Niall Doran was recently awarded with a Pride of Australia Medal for his work on ‘The Bookend Trust'. This is a scholarship program developed by private supporters in partnership with UTas. The program aims to boost environmental awareness and to
provide educational opportunities that might not otherwise be available.

News and Events
The School of Zoology Christmas Party was held recently at Fish 349 restaurant in North Hobart. The theme was “Feather, Fur or Fins” so many a feather was donned and fur (fake of course) was adorned, and a few Fins from Finland showed up...
This was a great night with a good turn out of staff and students. Huge thanks go to Jemina Stuart-Smith and Jess Melbourne-Thomas for organising this event.
The School of Zoology Green Office Initiative was launched in October. The notice board in the Zoology tearoom displays information on reducing your personal carbon footprint, and what steps the School is taking to be a more environmentally friendly place. Suggestions always welcome!
