Welcome
Dr Chris Burridge will be starting as lecturer and researcher on September 18 th . Chris is a molecular ecologist who uses genetic techniques to answer exciting questions about biogeography, evolution and macroecology. He looks forward to teaching and supervising students within the school.
Professor Peter Frappell will be starting in his new role as Dean of Graduate Research this month, Peter will be associated with the School for research purposes, and will share an office on level 3.

Mathieu Russell who is working with Erik Wapstra on a project titled: Sexual Selection; the genetics, histology and behaviour of sperm competition systems.
Shannon Troy will be starting shortly, Shannon will be working with Menna Jones and Hamish McCallum on landscape ecology of Spotted Tailed Quolls.
We also welcome veterinary students: Sylvia Keijser and Hilda Bradenburg, they are visiting from Utrecht in the Netherlands doing research projects on Tasmanian devil movement patterns.

Awards & Events
The School of Zoology Awards & Postgraduate Poster Night was recently held and was another great success, the winner of best poster on the night went to Toby Patterson, with Keisuke Itonaga, Tracey Hollings and Sarah Tassell receiving honourable mentions. Prizes and certificates were given out on the night to recognise student achievements and contributions to research during the past year. A big thanks to everyone who was involved in this successful night!
Three Zoology PhD candidates presented their research at the TUPA Sharing Excellence in Research Conference at UTAS on 5th September: Belinda Yaxley and Martin Marzloff gave talks, and Kevin Redd presented a poster. Congratulations to Martin Marzloff who won the prize for best presentation in the Antarctic and Marine Studies theme.
Earlier in the year CSIRO Publishing nominated “Bettongs, Potoroos and the Musky Rat-kangaroo” for the 2008 Whitley Awards. The book, co-authored by Randy Rose, has recently been awarded a Commendation in the category of Natural History by the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales.
Goodbye and Farewell
On a sad note Dr Eric Guiler passed away on the 3 rd July, he will be remembered as an enthusiastic teacher and a passionate advocate for conservation of our Tasmanian Fauna.
